Four Key Considerations for Stainless Steel Casting Processes
Release date:
Nov 14,2025
Abstract
The handling of stainless steel casting process details directly affects the quality of the stainless steel castings. While the general workflow is similar, stainless steel casting differs in this regard.
There are subtle differences among stainless steel casting manufacturers, which significantly impact the quality of stainless steel castings. So, what details should you pay attention to?
1. To prevent the formation of white cast iron during the casting process of stainless steel castings, measures must be taken—otherwise, it will be impossible to achieve excessively thin wall thicknesses. For aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy die-cast parts, the fillet radius of the castings should be no less than 2–5 mm.
2. The draft angle for stainless steel castings should be slightly steeper than that of sand-mold castings—typically 38–40% greater than the sand-mold version.
3. The minimum wall thickness for stainless steel castings should be greater than that of sand-cast parts, as metal molds dissipate heat more rapidly.
4. The thickness of the inner walls and internal ribs in stainless steel castings typically ranges from 0.55 to 0.65 times the thickness of the connecting outer wall. Additionally, because the inner walls (and ribs) cool more slowly, the casting is prone to cracking at the junction between the inner and outer walls during solidification shrinkage.
These are the four key points to keep in mind when working with stainless steel castings. Only by paying close attention to the details can you prevent issues like porosity and cracking in precision-cast parts.
